HSBC commissioned the 2019 Sustainable Financing and Investing Survey to better understand how ESG considerations impact the decisions of issuers and investors today and how sustainability issues are expected to shape capital markets in the future. This report presents the findings of the survey, which is based on the responses of 500 issuers and 500 investors across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas.
The survey found that 94 per cent of investors and 93 per cent of financial product issuers believe sustainability issues are important. In terms of drivers to embrace ESG criteria, 54 per cent of investors say they are motivated to invest sustainably because doing so may lead to improved returns or reduced risk. For issuers, external factors are a stronger catalyst, 46 per cent say that regulation is a key driver.
