Cumulative green bond issuance in Hong Kong now stands at USD7.1 billion after six issuers raised USD2.6 billion in 2019. While 5 per cent down from 2018 volumes, the market in 2019 saw the HKSAR government’s inaugural green bond, and an increasing diversification of issuer types and project categories funded by green bonds, including Buildings (at record high 61 per cent), Waste, Industry, Transport, Water and Land Use and Energy.

Produced in partnership with HSBC, supported by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and the Hong Kong Green Finance Association, the Hong Kong Green Bond Market Briefing 2019 examined a range of green bond deals from domestic issuers, and for the first time assessed their post-issuance disclosure. The Briefing also analysed market dynamics from a broader perspective including green bond deals arranged in Hong Kong, reflecting its increasing role as a green and sustainable finance hub for the region.
