China was the world’s biggest issuer of green bonds by issuance amount in 2019, with a total amount issued reaching USD55.8 billion/CNY386.2 billion, representing a 33 per cent increase from USD42 billion/CNY282.6 billion. Transport is the largest theme, showing a robust increase by 11 per cent from USD10.1 billion/CNY70.5 billion to USD11.2 billion/CNY78.1 billion.

Last year saw China’s first municipal green bond issued, and strong growth in green bonds issued by non-financial corporates – all these show that green bonds are playing an increasingly important role in more diverse sectors. In this China Green Bond Market annual report, CBI has identified recommendations for supporting the further development of China’s green bond market.
